How do I self-administer a Vitamin B12/Lipotropic injection?

After determining the most effective weekly dose of the B-12/Lipotropic injections to meet your individual needs, you will be given the option to take the injections home for self administration or to come in each week for a nurse to administer the injections for you.  If you decide to self-administer the injections, please follow the directions on the instruction sheet given to you by Dr. Summers and his staff.  If you are doing single injections (with 1 cc of solution in each syringe), then please wait 48 hours between injections.  If you are doing double injections (with 2 cc of solution in each syringe), the please wait 48 hours between injections.  Lipotropic injections are most effective in enhancing weight loss when taken on a consistent basis, at least 1 time per week.

Instructions to give an injection:

  • Using an alcohol wipe, clean the injection site.  Make sure the cleaned area is about 2 inches in diameter.

  • Place your thumb and forefinger on either side of the injection site.  Pinch up to 2 inches of skin.

  • Insert the needle at a 45 to 90 degree angle into the pinched-up skin.  Do this quickly; it will hurt less.  Remember to keep the upper hip very relaxed (at injection site).  Do this by putting all of your weight on the opposite leg.  You will experience much less pain and soreness after giving yourself the injection if you make an effort to inject yourself into a relaxed muscle in your upper hip (as directed).

  • Be sure to insert the needle with the bevel up and insert all the way to the end of the needle.  This will help you inject the medicine correctly.

  • Release the skin, holding the syringe in place.Pull back slightly on the plunger.  If you see blood in the syringe, don’t inject.  If this occurs, withdraw the needle until you do not see any blood in the syringe and then continue with administering the injection.  If there is no blood in the syringe, continue with the injection.

  • To inject the medication, slowly push the plunger all the way down.  After the Injection:Remove the needle from the skin and hold an alcohol wipe on the injection site.

  • Apply a bandage if you are bleeding.

  • Dispose of the syringe in a safe manner.  Example:  Put in a plastic container and then dispose in a manner that keeps you and other safe from making contact with the syringe.  It is normal to experience some soreness after administering an injection, but if you are experiencing excess pain please come into our office and discuss this with us.
